If the culture of Austen, the intrigue of Christie, and the characters of Dickens could co-exist alongside dragons and yetis, that would be the world K. Starling creates in her debut novel Talismans, Teacups, and Trysts. Banter, eccentric personalities, and magic weave together to create a story that will charm readers of fantasy and mystery alike.
“My life was my source material—not that we have a pet dragon, nor do I possess magical abilities,” commented Starling. “The themes of abiding friendship and found family, as well as the richness of Deaf culture (witnessed through her Deaf son), were important for me to include in my novel.”
Talismans follows the misadventures of Penelope Clearwater, a sleuth who investigates private matters for ladies. When a suspicious death leads Penelope and her partner in crime, Walt, to investigate one of the wealthiest families in the county, the pair is thrust into a world of dragons, myths, and intrigue. With the aid of her genius uncle, who is deaf and communicates through sign language, and her force-of-nature aunt, Penelope races to protect the innocent.
One excerpt, characteristic of the narrator’s tone, reads, “‘Oh, look, our transport.’ Walt waved at the forest dragon. ‘Come to rescue us, have you, you old scalywag?’
{Narrator’s Note: She did indeed say scaly-wag, not scallywag. It is a pun.}
The flirt winked at her before letting loose a roar that reverberated in their chests.”
Talismans, Teacups, and Trysts is 270 pages and is now available in ebook and print versions at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online booksellers.
